Marley's Story,
Marley is a very loving & friendly two year old who happens to have a developmental delay and Cortical Visual Impairment. When Marley was almost 5 months old I began to notice some developmental delays. She was unable to roll over & had difficulty lifting her head. It was also around this time that I began to notice Marley's eyes. She avoided eye contact, never seemed to look at faces & only focused on lights. Marley than began seeing an ophthalmologist & at the age of 8 months Marley still had no improvement in her development. Her eyes also began to show signs of cross eyes & the ophthalmologist scheduled her for Strabismus surgery which has made a remarkable difference in her vision. Although Marley still seems to have difficulty with close up objects she will visually attends to objects for longer periods now and is making eye contact which is HUGE!!!
Marley recieves Vision therapy twice a month from Delta Gamma for children with visual impairment. The DGC staff is committed to helping children who are blind or visually impaired reach their full potential through family-centered & specialized services & support. Every year the center provides thousands of hours in educational, theraputic & family support services to children & their families. They offers a playgroup for children under 3 called Buddy Builder once a week. They also provide parents with training, siminars, pot lucks & support groups. It's hard to put into words how much the Delta Gamma Center mean's to us but I wouldn't know where i would be without them. They offer Marley & I lots of support, endless resorces & truley care about kids with visual impairments.
Here is two links to news clips that aired in the past the, 1st explains more about the center itself & the 2nd talks about the opportunities they provide. Marley & I are in the 2nd video!
