Welcome to the Wheel Freedom - Breast Cancer Riders Team Page

Hi, I'm the team leader, Dale Unroe, and for this third year of this fun & fantastic ride I welcome in those MS-Ride Team Fidelity riders joining us as a training ride. The team which before was a mostly motley crew known as Team One in Eight is growing. This is really encouraging to see and great as it should be even more fun on ride day as we see each other and meet for this great cause.

P.S. I've come up with something distinguishing to help in the crowd of a thousand+ riders that will provide a quick ID of our team. Each team rider will receive a breast cancer pink wrist band to be worn on the left wrist.

Breast cancer is such an impactful disease that one in every eight women statistically has a positive detection for breast cancer during their lives. Although not as common, men (who curiously also have breasts) are likewise impacted. The research funded here is really going to some incredible projects and I'd encourage you to follow the links from the Ride Cincinnati site for further information on this. Also you can visit the Barret Cancer Center's site here: http://www.uccancercenter.uc.edu/ & www.universityhospitalcincinnati.com/cancer/index.html

This is a fantastic and worthy event and although there isn't a minimum fund-raising amount like the MS-Ride event the ride is a fundraiser. Due to the size of our team we will receive some incentives to raise money for the research for Breast Cancer that is directly funded by this event to Cincinnati's own Barrett Cancer Center. Fleet Feet Sports in Blue Ash has provided our team a $100 gift certificate for the top fundraiser. This is in addition to the other great incentives from the ride itself. Also bike shop, Fast Wheels Bikes, in Norwood in donating a Bike Tune-up that is regularly $49.99 - this gift will be award to a randomly decided person on the team on the day of the ride and will require rider participation. The Gift Certificate, Tune-up and Team Photo will all take place at the after ride party in Yeatman's Cove.

The monies raised are uniquely given primarily in the form of research grants of which Ride Cincinnati's Board screens each grant seeking program on its merits and impact and decides which to and which not to fund. One of the women who in part this ride was created in response to her experiences, Mrs. Allison Gordon, sits on this distribution board. Her father, Dr. Harvey Harris, is highly involved in this too and has set this charity up for great success.

Allison is a married mom who has survived breast cancer twice; however, her mother unfortunately did not. The ride is in memoriam to her mother, Marlene Harris, and the women in three households of neighbors all dramatically impacted by this disease.

The husbands and fathers of these three families joined heads and created this ride as a way to do something to fight the disease that has so affected them. As riders themselves they had modest goals for the first year of a handful of riders and few thousand dollars in donations. Dr. Harvey Harrris, Ronald Stern, and Craig Cowit founded this ride in 2007.

It caught fire though and at the last minute with a little spontaneous radio and TV promotion, it exploded into a huge turnout. Some 900 riders assembled next to the Purple People Bridge and rode east out on Kentucky 8 as the dawn broke on a perfect weather day. The ride raised will over $100,000 that year surpassing the wildest hopes and dreams of Allison, her father and her other co-founder neighbors.

It is a special ride in many ways and I'm happy that you are considering joining this fantastic team.
