Purpose |
This event is meant as a means of empowering our Veterans, as well as our local citizens. There are many ruck marches that are out there to bring awareness to Veterans issues, which is a great thing, but this march is meant to inspire and empower our Veterans and to encourage them to continue to push themselves every day. To remind them that just because your service has ended your purpose has not. To remember that it was through hard work and the encouragement of others that inspired us to greatness!
Funds raised from this event will go to the Chatham VFW's programs such as the Veteran Unmet Needs Program, the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Scholarship, etc. The money from this will go to the aid of our local Veterans and community.
What’s with the name? |
Well, here’s the story:
Dec. 23, 1944 - "Battle of the Bulge" - An entire U.S. armored division was retreating from the Germans in the Ardennes forest when a sergeant in a tank destroyer spotted an American digging a foxhole. The GI, PFC Martin, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, looked up and asked, "Are you looking for a safe place?" "Yeah" answered the tanker. "Well, buddy," he drawled, "just pull your vehicle behind me...I'm the 82nd Airborne, and this is as far as the bastards are going."
