Our Mission

We Want to End Polio

Polio maims, it cripples and sometimes it kills. Even today with our advanced medical resources, there is no cure for polio. Prevention is the only answer! Growing up in the 1950's, your race directors lived through the fear of polio, especially in the summer. No one knew its origin or what
precautions to take for prevention. In 1952 reported cases of polio in the United States alone reached a high point of almost 58,000 with 3,145 deaths and 21,269 persons suffering permanent paralysis in some form. What happens with polio is that the virus destroys nerve cells in the central nervous
system which results in irreversible loss of muscle fibers supplied by those nerves. Jonas Salk developed an inactivated form of polio virus in 1955 that was delivered by injection. An oral vaccine was developed by Albert Sabin (produced by weakening a llive virus) and released for immunization in 1962. The last reported case of polio in the United States was in 1979. Unfortunately, polio remains a crippler of children and young adults in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Nigeria was recently declared to be polio free. However, through the efforts of Rotary International, the Gates Foundation and the World Health Organization, the incidenc of Polio world-wide has been greatly reduced with just 114 cases reported in 2014. We are so close to ending polio world-wide and you can be proud to have joined in this effort, by planning to run/walk this 5 K sponsored by Fort Wayne area Rotary Clubs.
