Last year's Memorial Day Stair Climbing Challenge has a new name: STARS, STRIPES & STEPS. We love the new name and the new logo, designed by eleven-year-old club member Abigail (Abby) Alvarez-Carrero. The kids will also be designing and decorating tee shirts, finisher awards and more! They will even be hand-decorating the awards and SWAG bags. We think its pretty cool that the kids that benefit from your generosity and drive are helping to make your day fun!

But wait, there's more! We've added a half-marathon-THE KNEE-HIGH HILLY HALF-that will have minimal stair climbing and maximum hill climbing. Get ready for a challenge! The 2K is now a 2 mile SOCK HOP, because we know you can. The 5K route-CRAZY CREW-has changed a bit but still includes 5 flights and 657 steps. And all routes include those gorgeous views of Hot Springs.

LATE AND SAME DAY REGISTRATIONS: We are limiting registrations to 100 participants total. Late and same day registrants' fees do not include tee shirts and there will not be a second run of shirts. Finisher awards will be awarded to all finishers.

We will offer same day registration if we have not reached our cap of 100 participants by that day. Please try to come on Sunday evening, from 5 to 8 p.m., to Centennial Park (245 Garden Street), downtown Hot Springs, for late registration and packet pickup! If you cannot come on Sunday, please arrive by 10:00 a.m. Monday to be sure we can process all the late registrants before 10:40.

Mornin' Sunshine will sell a tasty lunch. A portion of the fee will donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Hot Springs
Boys & Girls Club staff and parents will offer desserts for donations.
The Vault will sell beer in the park that afternoon, starting at 12:00.

All participants will be required to sign an additional Veterans Administration waiver at the event; online signature will not be accepted for this waiver. Participants under the age of 18 will need an adult signature on this waiver. Yes. Students 15 and under have lower prices of just $15.00 for Sock Hop and Crazy Crew; $20.00 for the Hilly Half (no early bird discount). Like the adults, they are subject to higher fees for registration after 5/14. Like the adults, they will not be guaranteed shirts or finisher award if they register after May 14th. Children six and under are welcome to accompany parents or guardians at no charge (no tee shirts or SWAG), but be aware that this is not a "stroller friendly" course. Those stairs are steep!

Pets are welcome if they are on a leash and you follow all city ordinances. (So bring your poop bags please.) Be courteous and remember that not everyone likes to be kissed by your puppy. (I don't know why, but it's true.)

Stars, Stripes & Steps is designed to help individuals honor America's fallen heroes by having the courage to get strong. Although we will have first place overall finisher awards, Stars, Stripes & Steps is not so much a race, but a personal challenge to get strong! From beginners to athletes, the Memorial Challenge is for everyone!

Although we are a walker-friendly event, the half-marathon is very hilly and it might be difficult for a walker to complete in the time allowed. Choose the event that suits your fitness level. Set a personal goal. Challenge yourself to go a little farther or a little faster this year. Personalize your challenge. Be creative! Carry a weighted backpack, firefighter gear, or your baby on your back. Have fun and get strong!


Stars, Stripes & Steps is a great training tool for the big stair climbing event in September! September 23rd is the date for the second annual Climb Hot Springs, a seven mile race (and three mile fun run) sponsored by the Hot Springs Rotary. Save the date and get in shape by walking or running Stars, Stripes & Steps! Choose the 5K if you need to power up your stair-climbing muscles. Choose the half-marathon if you need to work on endurance or hill-climbing.

We have not yet put together any special program for teams, but we would love it if you initiated that on your own. Tell us what you want to see for team efforts next year.

Challenge Hot Springs is proud to be under the fiscal sponsorship of Black Hills Community Foundation. When you donate to Challenge, you help fund our efforts to support active events in and around Hot Springs, especially new events and events associated with stair-climbing. In addition to supporting events, ChallengeHS: is building a race kit, which is used by many local groups for their race events; recently repaired the city's five historic stairways in downtown Hot Springs and is building a fund for future repairs; and recently teamed up with The Boys & Girls Club and Keep Hot Springs Beautiful to create a "Litter Bug Crew" �-Club kids who are keeping our downtown trail and stairways clean of trash!

Although the focus of Stars, Stripes & Steps is personal challenge, we thought we ought to honor first place finishers. We will have awards for first place male and female in each category. The Boys & Girls Club Kids are making the awards. We will also have finisher's awards for those who finish the course within three hours, 4 1/2 hours for the Hilly Half �-yup, the kids made those too and each one is unique! We will be using our shiny new time clock and trying to properly track your time for you this year. (Yup, we kinda goofed that up last year, sorry.)

When we are strong individuals, our country is strengthened. When we are honorable, we demand honor from our leaders. When we are courageous, we bring courage to the nation.
On Memorial Day, we honor our nation's fallen soldiers by having the courage to get strong!
