In December of 2013, Tim & Leah received unbelievable news. Leah, a healthy 42 year old mother of three had cancer: Lung Cancer. She never smoked, in fact no doctor can explain why she got this.

Soon after her diagnosis, they learned that her cancer was rare; only 3-5% of all lung cancer patients receive her particular diagnosis. Although it is rare, there is a Targeted drug available. Thanks to this oral medicine that she takes twice daily, Leah is able to go about life as normal. Unfortunately, the cancer will eventually develop a resistance to the medication and it will stop being effective. What happens then, we don't know.

We see great value in these new Targeted drugs that are being developed for a variety of cancers. They have fewer side effects than chemotherapy and radiation treatments. There is a great need for funding further research and development of these drugs, especially for lung cancer. More education for health care professionals and the public is needed as well. If Leah could have been diagnosed sooner, her prognosis might have been better. Instead, she is in the ultimate fight of her life. Leah is just one example of the many people being diagnosed daily, which is why funds need to be raised for more research and a cure!

The American Lung Association will be launching our new strategic campaign on May 11th. LUNG FORCE, led by the American Lung Association, is on a mission to make lung cancer history - uniting women to stand together with a collective strength and determination to lead the fight against lung cancer and for lung health.

Consider these terrible facts:

• Every five minutes, a woman in the U.S. is told she has lung cancer.
  
• Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women in the U.S., surpassing breast cancer in 1987.
  
• The lung cancer death rate in women has more than doubled over the past 35 years

It's a big problem-so we have big goals. The LUNG FORCE movement works to change people's minds about what it means to have lung cancer-so that everyone understands their risks. We raise our voices for innovations in research that will lead to earlier detection and more personalized treatments-so that everyone has a fighting chance.

And we work to advance lung health-a life free of lung disease-for everyone who suffers from asthma, COPD and other lung diseases, or has someone in their life who does.

During our Turquoise Takeover icon week we are asking citizens across the city to show their support.
