Course Description |
The 13.1 mile race will be an 'out and back' run on the D&H Rail-Trail from Forest City to Union Dale. The trail is approximately 15 feet wide and recently resurfaced with fine crushed stone, for a superb running surface. The course is basically flat with a slight upgrade going northward and a slight down-grade for the return and finish.
Water stations will be approximately every 2 miles. Post race food will be available.
The race is a great tune-up for those training for the Steamtown Marathon and a great race for those attempting longer distance runs.
Race participants will be limited to 325. Registration packets can be picked up race day starting 7:30 AM.

About the Rail-Trail Council of NEPA |
The Rail-Trail Council is a non-profit organization working to develop recreational trails on abandoned railbeds in Northeast PA. They organized in 1991 and went about raising funds for the purchase of the 38-mile Delaware & Hudson right-of-way, that runs northward from Simpson to the NY border. With Transportation enhancement (TE) funding, acquisition has occurred along with a master plan and construction documents for the first 30 miles. Since the funding requires a 20% match, much work is necessary to raise funds; membership is optional, but helps with continuing progress. In Fall of 2006, the first 10 miles were resurfaced following extensive drainage improvements. Plans for the next ten are underway with TE funding and partial PA DCNR funds. The Council is continuing to raise the funds for the needed match.
The D&H follows the upper Lackawanna River and Stillwater Dam in the south, and the Starrucca Creek in the north, even running along the mighty Susquehanna River as it enters New York. A major trailhead with parking is located in Forest City, with the newly resurfaced trail 2 miles to the south and 8 miles to the north. As the trail leaves the vestiges of the coal mining industry of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley, it continues northward into the Endless Mountains Heritage Region of small rural towns, farmlands, stone walls and forested lands. It passes through the towns of Union Dale, Herrick Center, Thompson, Starrucca, and Lanesboro, where it passes under the 'Bridge of Stone', the Starrucca Viaduct. The D&H Rail-Trail is an important part of the linking group of trails from Upstate New York to Philadelphia. Work is underway to continue the linkage of trails through the Lackawanna Valley to Pittston and Wilkes-Barre, and on to the D&L Heritage system of trails and canal paths to Washington Crossing.
