Gavin’s Story: |

Age Diagnosed: 11 Years Old
Date diagnosed: October, 2018
Diagnosis: Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma with lung and liver metastasis
Treatment: 42 weeks of chemotherapy, including 6 weeks of radiation therapy.
Parents: Herb and Rebecca Hatheway
Siblings: Lane and Tara
Gavin Hatheway is in the 6th Grade at Robey Elementary School. His birthday is March 31.
After some lower back pain in the fall of 2018, Gavin was sent to Riley Hospital for testing. An ultrasound revealed that he had a mass in his abdomen. CT scan confirmed this and also revealed that he had tumors in his lungs and liver.
Gavin was admitted to Riley Hospital on October 22, 2018. He underwent a liver biopsy and bone marrow biopsies. Gavin was diagnosed with Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma on October 26, 2018. Gavin had to be intubated during a surgery to place a port in his chest for chemotherapy. The tumors and some fluid on his lungs caused him to have some trouble breathing on his own. This led to being on a ventilator for most of his 30 day hospital stay. Gavin began his chemotherapy on October 27, 2018. He continued with chemo every Saturday while hospitalized. Gavin was able to come home November 21, 2018, the day before Thanksgiving.
Gavin is now being treated at Riley Hospital Hematology and Oncology Clinic. He will undergo a total of 42 weeks of chemotherapy, including 6 weeks of radiation therapy. Surgery is not an option at this time. Gavin has had multiple CT scans, PET scan, MRI and several blood transfusions.
Gavin enjoys playing video games, especially The Legend of Zelda and watching YouTube videos. Gavin’s favorite places to visit include Florida and The Great Smoky Mountains. Gavin is currently doing home bound school. He is looking forward to the day when he can go back to school and see his friends every day.
We are thankful for the support of family and friends as Gavin fights this cancer.
