Volunteer Info

Volunteers are an integral part of any Outrun the Sun program. By giving your time and energy to the Outrun the Sun Race Against Melanoma, you help Outrun the Sun, Inc. fund skin cancer education and melanoma research programs. Your help makes a tremendous difference and we thank you!

Volunteers will receive assignment instructions and volunteer T-shirts when they check in on race day at the Outrun the Sun tent.

While we will do everything possible to allow you to volunteer in the area you have selected, we may need to shift volunteer responsibilities to where the need is greatest.

Volunteer Positions

Chip Removal: You will help remove the timing chips from participants' shoes after they clear the finish line and before they proceed to the water and food stations.
Requirements: This requires the ability to stand for periods of time, reaching and quick movement.

Water/Snack Distribution: Once race participants cross the finish line, they will receive water and fruit. Help ensure that people receive the water and refreshments after they complete the race.
Requirements: This requires standing for periods of time, reaching and quick movement.

Course Marshal: Help assist police officers with directing vehicular and participant traffic, directing participants to proper lanes and in helping aid in participant safety at intersections and entrances to neighborhoods.
Requirements: This requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, strong (loud) voices that can be heard by participants, a comfort with giving direction.

Event Set Up: Involves setting up tables and chairs, displaying sponsor banners and event signage, transporting signage to the course routes, setting up water containers, trash and recycling containers and more.
Requirements: This requires walking and lifting.

Kids' Zone: Volunteers are responsible for establishing the activities (with OTS approval) available to kids along with securing in-kind "goodies" for bags. Volunteers also must have child safety in mind at all times.
Requirements: This requires creativity, the ability to secure in-kind goodies, and the ability to interact well with kids and their parents.

Tear Down: Calling all strong people! Dismantling event equipment such as tables and chairs, picking up signage on site and throughout the course routes and providing light clean up are all parts of the tear down process.
This requires volunteers who can lift and carry heavy objects and/or who can walk, bend and move easily.

Water Stations: Participants receive their much-needed water and/or sports drink along the course routes at the water stations. Oftentimes a sponsoring organization or community group enjoys gathering colleagues to man the water stations.
Requirements: This requires the ability to stand for long periods of time, bend, reach and move quickly. We prefer that water station volunteers be at least 10 years of age or have prior experience (and are accompanied by an adult.)
