Run for Sight - 2016 - Team Charlie

We are Team Charlie! We are here to help raise awareness for children with visual impairments, the phenomenal work the Delta Gamma Center performs, and to show everyone that anything is possible with hard work, love, and support.

Charlie's Vision story began in 2013 shortly after he was born. On May 3rd, Charlie's 5th day of life, our lives changed. The Ophthalmologist took one look at little Charlie's eyes and diagnosed him within 2 minutes of having Peters Anomaly and congenital glaucoma. He was prescribed a bountiful amount of medications and biweekly visits to the eye doctor. Charlie was taking oral medicine and eye drops on an hourly basis. He continued with 2 visits a week until at the age of 3 weeks his cornea ruptured (very bad) as a result from his glaucoma and he underwent an emergency cornea transplant later that day (19 days old, successful!). This was only a week before his scheduled glaucoma shunt surgery, which was also successful (one week later). These two surgeries brought a welcome sense of normalcy to our lives - we could finally start to relax and get into a normal routine. This continued until his cornea transplant began to reject after 4 months. Charlie had his 2nd cornea transplant at 6 months old (successful), and that cornea is still clear with no signs of rejection! In total, Charlie has had 3 eye surgeries and ~10 Exam Under Anesthesia. He's gone down from 8 medicines on an hourly basis to only 4 eye drops 4 times a day. He had a vision and physical therapist for 12 months and saw them on a weekly basis, but now only sees his vision therapist once a month because of his great strides. We are so grateful for everything that Charlie's doctors and therapists have done for him! We know he wouldn't be where he is today without them, or the loving support of our family, friends, and the Delta Gamma Center!
