Run 5 miles through 300 years of history!

Immerse yourself in rural Iowa landscapes for this one-of-a-kind off-road race. You’ll splash through streams, plow through fields, and enjoy post-race treats from the Machine Shed. The course starts and ends in the 1876 town of Walnut Hill and runs through our three historic farm sites. Be sure to wave to to the horses, cows, sheep, and pigs! All finishers receive a long-sleeve shirt and a cowbell medal.

Race Day Schedule

8:15 a.m. — Doors open
8:30 a.m. — Costume contest photos
9 a.m. — Race begins
10 a.m. — Awards
10:30 a.m. — Kids' Run

Packet Pickup

Thursday, November 7: 3–6 p.m., Fleet Feet, 521 E. Locust, Des Moines
Friday, November 8: 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Living History Farms, 11121 Hickman, Urbandale

Chip Timing

Runners must wear a bib/chip number provided by the race. Only registered athletes and authorized volunteers allowed on the course.

Race Shirt

Long-sleeve t-shirt for all race participants. Available in sizes XS to 3XL. (Size not guaranteed for late registrants.)

Entry Fees

  • $45 early registration (through 9/1)
  • $50 registration (9/2-10/20)
  • $60 late registration (10/21-11/8)

No race day registration

Parking

Runners and spectators should enter the Living History Farms grounds from Hickman Road. Due to construction, parking will be on the grass south of the Visitor Center. Please note there will be no public access through the Douglas gate on race day.

Volunteer

Help at packet pickup, at the start/finish line, or out on the course. Volunteers receive a free cowbell.
