About Ride the Dirt Wave

Ride the Dirt Wave
Klootchy Creek ~ Whiskey Run ~ Newport

Ride the Dirt Wave was created to showcase mountain bike trail systems on the Oregon Coast. Each location has active bike clubs and trail builders that have been working hard to build these awesome trials. We work directly with the members of the clubs and they will be our tour guides of the best trails in each region. We welcome everyone to come and see what the OregonCoast has to offer as we Ride the Dirt Wave!

This year we will be highlighting three trail systems on the Oregon Coast. We start with Klootchy Creek Trails on the North Coast just outside of Cannon Beach & Seaside, off HWY 26. Klootchy Creek has trails for all levels of riders from flowy & fast jump lines on advanced blue & black diamond trails to family friendly/beginner short and sweet trails, perfect for new riders and little shredders to session!

Next we will venture to the South Coast where Whiskey Run Trails await. This purpose built mountain biking trail system in the Coos County Forest sits between Coos Bay & Bandon. There are trails for all levels of riders from family friendly/beginner areas to advanced jump lines and Double Black diamond trails.

Our final event will take place in Newport on the Central Oregon Coast. On Saturday, we will offer shuttled rides from Bike Newport to the brand new Big Creek Trials that will be led by our local bike club. Our race day will take place at the Big Creek Trails where we will have the Flow Duro Championship event.

Ride the Dirt Wave has the option for two days of riding in each location. Day one has several ride options open to many levels of riders. These rides will be led by the local bike clubs and trail groups who built and maintain the trails. These will be “fun rides” and showcase the favorite trails in the area and be open to a broad range of people. There will be food, beverages, music, and information on the trails, clubs, and local area.

Day two is race day! The Flow Duro Challenge Race is a fun, fast paced, timed competition down a short, flowy, mostly downhill trail. It combines all of our favorite elements of friendly competition down sweeping trails with a small amount of climbing and a large amount of fun!

Each race takes place at a different location on the Oregon Coast. Every race course will have different terrain, difficulty, length, elevation, & times. There will be two timed runs down the course and the fastest time will be kept. You are encouraged to attend all 3 races to be in contention for the “Champion of the Dirt Wave Series!”

About Flow Duro Challenge Race

Ride the Dirt Wave - Flow Duro Challenge Race
Klootchy Creek ~ Whiskey Run ~ Newport

Description: The Flow Duro Challenge Race is fun, fast paced, timed competition down a short, flowy, mostly downhill trail. It combines all of our favorite elements of friendly competition down flowy trails with a small amount of climbing and a large amount of fun!

This race is limited to 100 riders. Racers will be placed in divisions by age and class and have two timed runs on trail. Best time is kept and points will be awarded to top 3 finishers in each category. Points will be assigned after each race and posted on the OBRA website. Points will accumulate for all 3 races in 2023. The series championship in Newport will be the final race to determine the “Champion of the Dirt Wave.”

Each race takes place at a different location on the Oregon Coast and each will be very different. Every race course will have different terrain, difficulty, length, elevation, & times. The race will be timed and start at the top of the hill (yes, you have to climb to the top but it won’t be timed!). You will have 2 timed rides and the fastest time will be kept. We highly recommend you check out the Trailforks description of each race course so you are aware if it is a black diamond or blue trail, the amount of climbing to get to top, and profile of trail.

Points: The top three men & women at each series event (Overall Winners), on a traditional mountain bike and on an e-bike will receive 15, 10 and 5 points respectively towards the series total. A category distinction of Expert or Sport does not factor into series points.

* Participants must compete in all three series events to be eligible for series awards.

Category Descriptions:
Please read the following descriptions to determine what category is most appropriate for you. We advise you to look at the trail forks information for each of the races as all differ in difficulty, length, elevation, and terrain.

Expert riders are highly skilled and comfortable with a wide range of obstacles encountered on a trail, including steep and loose terrain and technical rock gardens. They can navigate most trail features confidently including black diamond trails that may have jump lines and larger obstacles.

Sport riders possess the ability to handle technical terrain, smaller jumps and drops, and are skilled at cornering. They are capable of completing most trails without stopping to walk a section, but may choose to go around larger jumps or drops. While some may have racing experience, it is not a requirement for a sport rider.

Categories may be combined if less than 5 people sign up for a given group.

Frequently Asked Questions

CAN I REGISTER ON RACE DAY?
Yes, but we prefer you register earlier. If you must register on race day you will pay a higher price. Please see schedule for packet pick up times.

ARE HELMETS REQUIRED?
Yes, helmets will be required for both events.

WHAT IS MINIMUM AGE TO RACE THE FLOW-DURO CHALLENGE?
The minimum age is 9 years old based on the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association guidelines.
This is not a race for beginners as the courses are fast & technical and have steep climbs to reach the top where race begins.

WILL THERE BE A PRE-RIDE OF FLOW-DURO COURSE?
Klootchy Creek & Whiskey Run will both have a Pre-Ride of the course on Saturday @ 1 PM.
Newport will not have an official Pre-Ride of the race course. The trails are open to the public and you are welcome to pre-ride on your own before the race. Parking is limited at the trail head so we suggest you park at the gravel lot next to Big Creek Park and take a warm up ride to the trail head.

DO I HAVE TO DO ALL 3 FLOW DURO CHALLENGE RACES? OR CAN I JUST SIGN UP FOR ONE?
You can sign up for one or all of the Flow Duro Challenges races. You can only be considered for the “Champion of the Dirt Wave Series” if you attend all 3 races.

WHY ARE THERE ONLY 100 SPOTS AVAILABLE IN THE FLOW DURO CHALLENGE RACE?
We are only allowing 100 people to register for the race so we have plenty of time to do 2 timed laps down the race course and need to allow time for climbing back to the top in between.

Parking Directions for Ride the Dirt Wave - Newport: Sunday, August 13, 2023.

Parking is very limited at Big Creek Park and the dirt road to the race course will be closed for the race on Sunday. You will need to park at Agate Beach Wayside and ride your bike or walk the "Ocean to Bay Trail."

Please park at Agate Beach Wayside from here you will need to bike or walk the .09 mile Ocean to Bay Path to Big Creek Park.

If you still need to pick up your race packet, you will need to check in at Big Creek Park between 7-8:00 AM and then ride the 3 miles to the top of the race course. If you picked up your race packet on Saturday, arrive w/ enough time to park and ride in to the race course. Please allow yourself plenty of time (at least 40 minutes) as the race will start promptly at 9 am. There will be water and a porta-potty at the bottom of the race course.

WHAT IF MY FAMILY WANTS TO WATCH?
Access to this race course is a bit limited (similar to Klootchy Creek), unless you are on a bike. We will have limited vans shuttling people from Big Creek Park to the bottom of race course. Shuttles are not for racers, only spectators. They will begin running in the morning from Big Creek Park at 7:45 AM. Only event vehicles are allowed on the dirt road during event as the road will be closed to through traffic. Family members are welcome to ride their bikes the 1.5 miles on the closed gravel road to the bottom of race course and then find a safe place along the course to watch. The finish line is close to the gravel road and will be a fun place to watch them come in.

There will be water and a porta-potty at the bottom of the race course.

WILL THERE BE FOOD OR DRINKS AVAILABLE?
We will have extra water available for riders at the trail head. Come prepared with your own water, power bars, snacks, etc. We will have a food cart on site from 11-3pm on Saturday and 11-2 on Sunday for you to purchase food on your own. We will have local beer on tap for purchase as well.

Our Sunday event is for riders who have some technical skills as the race courses vary from advanced blue to black diamond (Advanced) trails. We suggest checking each course on trailforks to see the profile and description and if it is within your level of riding. The Flow Duro Challenge Race is not designed as a beginner event, especially if there are wet conditions.

HOW DO I SUPPORT THE LOCAL TRAILS?
Klootchy Creek Trails: You may donate directly to the Northwest Trail Alliance, the local bike club that builds and maintains the trails.

Whiskey Run Trails: You may donate directly to the Wild Rivers Coast Mountain Biking Association, the local bike club that builds and maintains the trails.

WILL THIS EVENT TAKE PLACE AGAIN NEXT YEAR?
Yes, we have a three year commitment from the Oregon Coast Visitors Association to grow this event on the Oregon Coast. This first year we wanted to start small with three venues but would like to include more venues in the coming years to showcase the awesome trails we have to offer on the Oregon Coast! If you have a trails system in your area that we should consider for the 2024 “Ride the Dirt Wave Series,” please reach out to: Director@OregonRides.com
