Courage League Sports

Courage League Sports is a non-profit adaptive sports and recreation organization that offers year-round programming for children and adults who aren’t able to go full speed due to a physical, cognitive or emotional disability. By adapting the pace, equipment, or nature of an activity, Courage League can provide a safe and accessible environment where participants can go at their own speed.

Courage League Sports was inspired by Jack, who at the age of eight, suffered multiple strokes that forever changed his life. Frustrated at the lack of options for her son, Melissa Clarke-Wharff opened Courage League Sports in Urbandale where those with special needs could participate and be active outside of a therapy atmosphere. Today, Courage League serves nearly 1,000 kids & 500 adults on a monthly basis in the greater Des Moines area.

This year, Courage League Sports opened their first licensed location in Iowa City, Iowa. The inspiration for Courage League Sports Iowa City has a story similar to Jack’s… Ten year old Sam is a happy, healthy boy who is primarily nonverbal, with cognitive and physical delays. Sam is unable to participate with his peers in typical sports and recreational activities. Sam’s circumstances and interests provided his parents the desire to open an Iowa City location and bring year-round adapted play to eastern Iowa! Courage League Sports Iowa City is currently operating out of Tiffin Elementary in Tiffin, Iowa.
