Tent at Gray's Lake 5525 Merle Hay Road, #130 Late Registration is $35 ($30 for Striders members) Johnston IA 50131 Packet pick-up will be available on race day, from 8:00 to 9:15 a.m., but participants are encouraged to pick up their packets on Friday evening. Race Day No parking at Gray's Lake. As you are driving down Fleur Drive you will see signs and volunteers that will direct you to park at Water Works on race day. Water Works Park is across the street from the North Entrance of Gray's Lake Park. The Parking assistants will begin directing traffic at 8 a.m. to help guide you. Going North on Fleur (lake on your right), you'll turn left at the light onto the street named Gray's Lake. Going South on Fleur (you'll turn just before the lake which will be on your left) If you're going South, you'll turn right at the next stop light after MLK turns into Fleur. You'll see the Lake on your left. The road will be Gray's Lake road

About The Event

Join us this year for the 17th Annual Capital Striders Loop the Lake 8km Run and Little Lakers Fun Run. This run marks the unofficial start of the racing season and is a must-do event for runners of all skill levels.

The flat and fast certified 8K race is run on a twelve foot wide (in most sections), relatively flat asphalt trail. Start time is 9:30 AM, making 2+ laps around Gray's Lake Park in Des Moines. Free parking will be available at Water Works Park, across the street from the northwest corner of Gray's Lake.

New this year:


  • Chili (vegetarian) and hot dogs for all participants at the post race party at Confluence Brewery
  • Awards to be given at the finishing area
  • Comfortable cotton-polyester blend race shirt
  • Little Lakers Fun Run moved to the finishing area of the 8km run
  • Free professional photographs from our friends at Panfoto.us

Because the Capital Striders is a not for profit organization, we believe in "running it forward". Proceeds go back into the local running community, whether that be through education, scholarships, or trail and route enhancement by adding water fountains. Free weekly group training runs help runners gain confidence through speed and distance training and because Striders runners are so darned nice, all abilities are encouraged to join us. You're sure to get some great free advice from your fellow Striders.

Distances and ages for the Little Lakers Kids' Run:
- 50 meter run: ages 0 - 2
- 100 meter run: ages 3 - 4
- 200 meter run: ages 5 - 8
- 400 meter run: ages 9 - 12

Gift cards will be given to overall 1st $75, 2nd $50, 3rd $25 &1st Masters $75 & 1st Senior Master $75; plus medals to the top 3 places in 5-year age groups through age 75+, male and female.

Only one award per person.

Winners may claim prizes at the finishing area of the 8km run
