CRMO Awareness Walk-A-Thon/5K - Team - Linda Walmer

Hi everyone,

For those of you that don't know, the health issue I've been battling since about 2009 is called CRMO (Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis). CRMO is a rare bone disease, in which the bones have lesions, inflammation, and crap loads of pain. In my case, I have lesions throughout my spine. For lots of reasons, including the fact that CRMO is rare and many doctors aren't aware of it, I didn't have an actual diagnosis until just over a year ago.

CRMO is more common in children. It's truly heart breaking to know the pain that these little ones are going through. And for them, not only are their bones more brittle (spines collapse, bones break), CRMO also impacts the way their bones grow or do not grow as well. On top of all of that, from the outside, the kids tend to look healthy, so it's hard for everyone to take the pain they feel during flares seriously and understand.

There is no known cure for CRMO. There are a lot of drugs that are tried with the goal of remission. The drugs are harsh and have a lot of really awful side effects. Sometimes they get to remission, but lots of times it's from one awful drug to another. With huge amounts of pain, struggles in school, impacts on family, etc.

October 26 is a CRMO walkathon. You can join some local walks, or participate as a "virtual" walker. With registration, you'll get a tshirt to wear on Oct 26, and virtual walkers can walk wherever you are that day, for as long as you'd like. I'll be wearing my t-shirt and walking in Japan! All proceeds go to two great non-profits that help with CRMO awareness, research, and providing support packages for children with CRMO and their parents.
