Proceeds to Support the Cat Ambassador Program |
In 1982, a woman named Cathryn Hilker and a cheetah called Angel launched a program at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden that was the first of its kind for zoos in the nation: the Cat Ambassador Program. Over the years, this program has inspired learning and engagement in hundreds of thousands of people through outreach programs in schools and other community centers.
The program showcases cats ranging in size from domestic house cats to cheetahs that have been trained to emphasize natural behaviors. Our educators utilizes unique and engaging teaching tools, bringing science to life as students learn about these endangered predators and the efforts under way to meet the challenges of their survival. Through these programs, we have found that the opportunity for children and youth to experience live animals in a learning setting can create deep connections in the learner and open avenues to understanding why conservation is so important and how we individually can take responsibility toward wildlife and their habitats.
