Due to the implications and effects of Covid on high school athletics in the past 1½ years, meet management will consider a petition to compete from high school athletes whose age prohibits them from competing per the event rules. For such a petition to be considered, the petitioning athlete must meet the age requirement for their state association. Such petitions will be considered and ruled on a case-by-case basis.

Runners compete in the races as unattached individuals.

The state where a runner resides determines in which regional meet he/she must participate. Runners must participate in the region to which their state
has been assigned. Boarding school students must compete in the region of their school location. Non U.S. citizens who attend high school in the U.S.
and who meet the age requirement may compete. Home-schooled students may compete in the region of their residence during the school year.

Any runner, whether they are in a public school, home school, boarding school, private school or independent school, must run in the high school Championship Race in order to qualify for the National Finals in San Diego. The top ten (10) finishers in the high school Championship Races will qualify for the National Championship on December 11, 2021 in San Diego, CA.
